Scrapbook Challenges sketch 255.

it's been a while since i played along and managed to upload to Scrapbook Challenges. but i still love my position there and love the amazingly talented girls and designers on the team. this week's sketch is inspired by a place mat found on Pinterest - and the talented Chanell turned it into a sketch for us
i used mostly scraps from the Sunshine in my soul range of papers by Glitz, Simple Stories, stamping and washi tape. layouts using scraps are still my favourite - economical and using all those pretty bits and pieces instead of throwing them out!
i even added a dotty paper from Project Life in the mix. the little camera sticker is from the Simple Stories range with a little diamond added for some sparkle.
the dots on my background is a stamp - i stamped it directly onto the background and then added some colour selectively using my water-colour paint.
i made some very tough decisions this week - and with some loving support from my DH we will get through even the toughest of times. but as i suspected when you give God and opportunity to open bigger and betetr doors in your life, you sometimes have to walk away from your comfort zone. but human nature is a funny thing and sometimes walking away is very difficult until you do it. so excactly 12 hours after i took action the first door has opened - and may i add....
it's one that i am very passionate about!!! here's to serving a MIGHTY GOD and many more miracles! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and never forsaking us!

form meets function - petaloo floral recycled journal

I am a list maker. I am always writing things down and making lists of things to do, buy or ideas. So this also means I have loads of notebooks all around the house, in my bag, next to my bed and in the car. So naturally when I have the chance to make a cute little notebook using left-overs and pretty stuff then I jump at the chance. I also like using things that I can repurpose into a functional item.
For my notebook I wanted to make a pretty cover using a few supplies, but mainly the pretty Petaloo flowers. I particular favour the jewelled Florettes and Gypsies in the range. The flowers are beautiful and delicate with amazing colour – but not too bulky for my style of scrapping. I like the fact that even when I use them on my layouts they can still comfortably fit into the page protectors without making my albums bulge at the seams.

But back to my little notebook.
I used an old book to create my cover. I simply tore off the existing cover from the book and used my big guillotine to cut off the spine part and also trimmed down the top and bottom edge for a slightly smaller cover.

I now have 2 parts – a front and back cover. I used ordinary white cardstock or thin paper for the inside pages. I cut them slightly smaller than the outside covers and then punched a set of holes into the pages using an ordinary office hole punch. For my cover I used the inside punched holes as a guide and drew guide circles on the inside of the covers, and then punched the holes using my crop-o-dile. The cover was decorated using a Celebr8 oval frame that I embossed using AC embossing powder. I inserted a printed vintage photo inside the frame and then finished off the bottom of the frame using a combination of the Jewelled Florettes and Jewelled Gypsies from Petaloo.
These pretty flowers are indeed a basic scrapbooking necessity – they are one of those products that can turn something simple into something spectacular in a few easy steps. A must have for your basic stash and your next pretty project. There are loads of designs and colours available in the Jewelled range – perfect for all your crafty needs.

scrap africa challenge - patchwork vintage bliss card.

Welcome to another Scrap Africa challenge. This month Marelize is challenging you to create something with a patchwork background. I used some of the beautiful Vintage Bliss paper by Simple Stories to create my card background. I used my square punch to punch the paper scraps into squares, inked the edges and adhered them to my background.
a quick sew with my machine to add texture to the seams did the trick to make it more authentic
the so happy sticker is from the Vintage Bliss sticker sheet matted onto grey cardstock and finished off with a pretty bloom and leaf
the pink square is a scrap from a technique i was playing with - markers and water to get a funky new look - nothing special but just the way i like it
and if you play along this week - you can win an awesome set of washi tapes in black and white. so head on over to the blog here and see what the rest of the design team came up with

designing with colour - accent colours and triadic colour schemes on a layout.

There are loads of beautiful paper ranges out there. Sometimes they appeal to you and sometimes they don’t! And that’s OK. Sometimes I find that in a particular range there is a paper that I love and yet nothing else – it’s like my personal style just can’t work around that little something that it lacks. Lucky for me I have had enough training in art that I can solve the problem quite easily. This week I chose to work with the beautiful Sunshine in my Soul range from Glitz. I love the papers and the designs but found that combined together they tend to be rather dull. So what’s a girl to do? Well throw in an accent colour!
Accent colours are colours that are used in small quantities to boost or to add wait to a colour scheme. They should in essence be complementary colours – but I have never really been one for rules. Accent colours work best if they are bright and exciting. It will add lift and punch to your design and colour scheme. In most colour schemes you will also introduce variations on saturation, tint and shade and that’s what you will find in my layout. I chose to add pink as an accent colour and combine it with the blue/grey and yellow of the Sunshine range of papers. Remember that you will also almost always add a neutral colour to your design like brown or black for matting, stamping and embellishments.
For my layout I used the brown on the back of one of the patterned papers as well as a brown cardstock for matting. Notice how the pink just adds that vibrancy that the layout would otherwise lack. Remember that accents are used in small amounts and strategically placed throughout the layout – much like a visual triangle to draw the viewer’s eye from left to right across your layout. You will notice that my colours the blue/grey and yellow are complimentary colours on the colour wheel. But where on earth did I find the pink? Well that’s where the triadic colour combination comes in.

Triadic Colours
Triadic colours are three hues equidistant on the colour wheel (give or take a few colours left or right when you are me). When you want a design that is colourful and yet balanced a triadic colour scheme might be the way to go.
A key factor here is that you don’t have to have designer credentials – but you have to obey certain design principles in order to have a well-balanced and well-designed layout. Not everyone is a designer but by following good advice through the ages by experts and those in the know, you too can design a beautifully colourful and proportional layout.
You can visit The Wholesaler's blog here to see more information of my triadic colour scheme.

birds of a feather.

As of late I am not a huge fan of off-the-page-projects. Don’t get me wrong I love making them - they have no rules and are uncomplicated to say the least. The problem I have is what to do with them afterwards – unless you have a specific place for them to permanently live or a shop to display them in to inspire others – then they just become dust collectors. So now I have the attitude that if I make something off-the-page I have to give it away to someone that will really appreciate it. And so came to be this little bird house. The base is something I have used before – a cardboard box that used to house Easter eggs – so very appropriate and fitting I think.
I started by covering the base with the Home to Nest range of papers by DoCrafts. WOW! Does the Ultimate die-cut pack have loads of goodies in to use – and the designs are just so fresh and beautiful! I used Artist Gel Medium to adhere and cover the paper on the base so that it would be protected against dust and general wear and tear (touchy feely people). The roof is covered in a layer of real moss bought from an art store and then decorated with flowers from Prima and Petaloo. The blooms were picked for their beautiful shapes, designs and colours, and then I threw in the colour purple for that something a little different and interesting.
But what I loved most about making this project is that I got to work with the beautiful themed Celebr8 Chipboard elements. No matter what your theme or project you can find something that will work – and the bird themed chipboard worked so beautifully together with the Home to Nest paper range. I used a variety of chipboards and coloured them in different ways – I embossed some with ZING! Embossing powders, others were simple inked using Versafine ink pads and then for my all-time favourite, yes you guessed it – the layered chippies. For the word “faith” I used silver leafing on the bottom and inked the word on top and then added a layer of Anita’s 3D glaze.
